The Angry Gamers
It never ceases to amaze me how gamers continually propagate the stereotype of just being hyperactive nerds with faces full of pimples, with no friends, and making themselves out to be the most unfriendly group to be a part of. I didn’t edit this or proof read it, I just wanted to throw it out there, any suggestions can be put in a comments or toss me a line at Napalm Riot. More after the break.
I was recently reading an article on Kotaku about why Crysis 2 is going multi-platform (see: consoles). In all honestly I could see where this was going a few kilometers off, but in my on going mission to prove myself wrong I opened the comments. It never fails, anytime a game running on the CryEngine is discussed it always deteriorates into a big raging dick-off to see how has the larger junk and ends up just being, in a word, gay. Maybe that’s why they call it the CRYengine, that’s what you do in the corner when you find the other nerd’s is a few centimetres longer.
When that is all said and done, which it never is, we add the PC Elitists and their PC superiority complex. It seems whenever it comes up there always has to be some anonymous twat-monkey that starts the console hate engine down the tracks with no conductor, blindly throwing the inferiority of the console version around as if to justify their investment in a monster gaming rig. While most of the time I agree that console versions of multi-platform titles won’t hold a candle to a well done PC version, it just seems like an overused argument by desperate people trying to rationalise. We can even go a step further with the elitists that refuse to even admit that a console can be a viable gaming platform. This make me embarrassed to have once been called a PC gamer.

On top of this is the inherent hate towards new comers. Lets face it, this argument has been used so many times its starting to chafe but still holds true, we were all noobs once. Imagine, a new gamer joins a match and asks a question, “How do I change weapons?” Of course, we can’t let this slide he should be playing if he doesn’t know the controls, hes going to get us all killed, he sucks, HE’S A NOOB. I purpose a challenge, the next time you see someone asking a question count how many others actually help and how many let their ass show too long, I guarantee you the helpers will be a terribly small minority. Of course there is the off chance you get all the at least half-decent people together and you have a good time, but how often does this happen? It goes beyond this, even well seasoned gamers are rude to other well seasoned gamers; I can be accused of doing this. There is an aura of hate and rudeness that surrounds the gaming community that I fear may never be lifted until our younger memebers learn some manners and our older members grow a larger sack.
I have been a member of the gaming community ever since my parents bought me an NES way back in the ’90s and I first laid my eyes on Super Mario Brothers; by my count that’s 14 years. Since then I’ve played at least one game on every major gaming platform and handheld, including the Dreamcast. While this may not even dent the time racked up by some other older people, as I am only 19 at the time of the writing, I feel as if I’ve been here long enough to see when there is a problem and give my plan to fix it. To the few people that read this, the next time you feel the need to sell your body to your chosen system or buy all the expensive drugs from your favourite franchise, try having some decency and give some actual arguments instead of giving a generic sheep cop-out. The next time you see a new player in need of help don’t fly off the handle, give them some tips. Maybe this will be an epidemic and spread around, maybe even leaking out into other groups, hell, the world could use it. I can be an optimist, can’t I?
